One half down, one half to go…

by Lori on May 3, 2012

I took a little break from logging a lot of miles in a week after the Baltimore Marathon in October. In fact, my mileage dropped significantly. There wasn’t a reason to ‘train,’ per se, and as the weather cooled and moved into winter, I was less excited about layering up and breathing the cold air. I give a lot of credit to those who persevere with winter running.

In the winter I decided to take the Titanium Girl Challenge – run the Athleta Iron Girl Half Marathon on one Sunday and the Frederick Half Marathon the following Sunday. Two half marathons in 7 days. I haven’t run that kind of mileage in a week since running it in a day over 6 months ago. I’m not going to lie – I was nervous a the thought.

My friend Lauren and I ran together in the Iron Girl race. The weather was perfect, and with both of us only having run 10 miles at the longest to prepare for the race, we had the same goal: just to finish.

The course was great. Some rolling hills, nice neighborhoods. Lauren had never used Gu before, so I introduced her to Roctane before the race and my new fave, peanut butter flavored Gu, at the half-way point. That energy gel sure gave her energy! I noticed she picked up the pace a little because I started breathing a little heavier. We were going at a slower pace for the first half, but that was changing.

At the 10-mile marker, when I was starting to think that I was on the downhill to getting tired, she said those dreaded words. “I feel great! Want to pick up the pace?” Not one to back down or look like a punk, I said, “Sure, I’ll try and keep up.” And keep up I did.

We were both so excited and a little emotional when we crossed the finish line. At the halfway point I figured if we maintained our pace I would finish well over my last half time, not factoring in the energy burst post-Gu. As we closed in on the finish, I saw that the timer was actually under my time for the Frederick half last year. I thought, “Wow, we REALLY picked up the pace and made up time!” In the end we finished in 2:19:11 and I couldn’t be more proud. I’m really proud of Lauren for doing so great in her first race!

To earn our Titanium Girl medal, we will be running again on Sunday along with my friend Jen. It will be nice to run through my own town and see folks I know cheering us on. I’m feeling pretty great, the weather is looking good, and I’m looking forward to the run.

Titanium Girl Challenge, I’ve got you.

Today is not the day to give up …

by Lori on April 23, 2012

As I sit down to write this, it’s a cold, rainy morning. That’s a huge difference from the beautiful sunny weather we had  just last week. It’s easy to get motivated to move when it’s sunny and nice – not so much on days like today.

I wasn’t going to let the weather get me down today. This morning I knew  I was going to push myself with weights in the morning, then will keep learning something new at tae kwon do with the kids tonight.

So this said, I share with you this awesome picture. It’s true. There will come a day when I won’t be able to do this anymore.

Fortunately, today wasn’t that day. Today I deadlifted more than I ever have before. Pretty cool…

When the race is in the 10-day weather forecast…

April 20, 2012

I’m a weather watcher. My running friends tease me about it, yet I’m comfortable with the fact that watching the weather is my job within our trio. Plus, as much as I can, I try to avoid running in the rain. It’s just not my thing. So I’m staring down the start of my first [...]

At this moment, exercise is a pain in just about every muscle. After lightening my load while the kids were on spring break, I didn’t just dip my toe back into the water, I did a cannonball in the pool. CrossFit first thing Monday morning was a tad of a shock to my system. Here [...]

Break’s over: Let’s get busy

April 16, 2012

My kids are back to school after the longest spring break ever. Twelve days. I love my kids, but … 12 days. Life as I had gotten used to it with both in school was put on hold, and my routine was shattered. I didn’t work out as often or as hard as I had [...]

PrimeParentsClub.com: Is CrossFit for you?

April 13, 2012

There’s been more in the media lately about a string of gyms called CrossFit. For those who watch “Biggest Loser,” Bob Harper is the latest celebrity to jump on the CrossFit bandwagon. He even did some of the famous workouts with his team. Reebok came out with a line of shoes for CrossFitters, too, and [...]

Cleared to save lives

April 13, 2012

I know it sounds strange, but I went to the BEST CPR class yesterday night! I was due for recertification for my Heartsaver/AED, which I must keep current along with my personal training certification. I was first certified back in high school, I believe, but I don’t remember what the catalyst was for taking the [...]

Because I don’t already do enough …

April 12, 2012

I’m adding yet another ‘to do’ to my exercise to do list. I’m not complaining – actually, I’m pretty excited to try it. Last year I took my kids (then 8 and 4) to check out a tae kwon do academy that friends own. The time wasn’t right – the kids just weren’t ready. Since [...]

8 Weeks Without Stepping on the Scale

April 11, 2012

About two months ago I let you in on my latest conquest–to go eight weeks without stepping on the scale. (Insert gasp!) I don’t think it’s a stretch to guess that the majority of women have an unhealthy obsession with this evil device. So I set out to tackle the beast, and tackle it I did. For [...]

Damn you, stupid scale…

January 25, 2012

If you’re anything like me, when you step on the scale, you get all emotional. There’s the build up … OK, what do I need to do to be the lightest possible? Go to the bathroom, take off the clothes (gasp!), hold your breath, and take the lightest step possible. There’s the wait … that [...]
